Gynecomastia is defined clinically by the present of a rubbery or firm mass extending concentrically from the nipples. Although gynecomastia is usually bilateral, it can be unilateral. It is usually a day care procedure which involves gland and fat removal. It can be done under local or general anesthesia depending on the glandular size and any coexisting co- morbid conditions. Post surgery patient has to wear a pressure garment for a period of 3 months. Mild restriction in heavy activities remains for few days otherwise patient is free to move about from 2nd day onwards.
Male breast reduction involves removing excess fat by means of liposuction followed by glandular excision through an intra areolar incision.
Reducing unwanted fat or the excess glandular tissue cannot be attained through weight loss and exercise alone as the gland is quite firm and the fat is also trapped inside the firmer component. This is a safe surgery and helps one to restore self-esteem.
Normally all men due to pubertal spurt have some amount of fat and gland component which gradually decreases as person approaches 18 years and by age 20 most of these things disappear. Persistence beyond that necessitates surgical correction.
This is mostly done on an out patient basis under Local anesthesia. Recovery is almost immediate and patient goes home immediately following the procedure.
We recommend patients not to drive immediately after surgery and take rest for that day completely and wear pressure garment continuously to decrease chances of hematoma formation. Exercises and gym or swimming is usually best avoided for 6-8 weeks. However normal activities like going to office and walk can be resumed in 2-3 days time.
