Eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure that removes excess fold of skin of the upper lids and pouches under the eyes (lower lids). This helps to improve your appearance, vision or both. It also helps in tightening of tissues especially in the lower eyelid. After the surgery there is some bruising and swelling which subsides within 7-10 days. Client can usually be back to normal activities in 1-2 days.

What is Blepharoplasty/ Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty also known as eyelid surgery is performed mainly for aesthetic reasons. Upper Blepharoplasty essentially removes skin and or fat depending upon the excess skin and or fat. Whereas in lower blepharoplasty the idea is to remove or reposition excess fat and give a contoured eyelid. We can combine lateral canthopexy along with lower Blepharoplasty in selected cases.

How is upper eyelid surgery performed?

Upper Blepharoplasty /Eyelid surgery is performed through upper eyelid crease incision. The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia and is a day care procedure. The excess skin is excised as per preoperative markings. After the excess skin, the herniated fat pads are addressed and removed accordingly. The layers are closed carefully so that the final incision falls in the upper eyelid crease and gives a natural contoured look. Tapes are applied at the end and the sutures are removed in 10 days.

How is lower eyelid surgery performed/ what is Transconjunctival/ Subciliary incision Blepharoplasty?

Lower Blepharoplasty/ Eyelid surgery is performed through subciliary incision or Transconjunctival approach. The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia and is a day care procedure. The Transconjunctival approach is done for younger individuals with only excess fat bulging, incision is placed Transconjunctivally, so that postoperatively no scar is seen. Subciliary incision is placed very carefully protecting the eyelashes and deepened to remove or reposition the excess fat. Some procedures like lateral canthopexy can be combined during this procedure to correct the canthal tilt.

What is 4 eyelid surgery?

4 Eyelid surgery refers to surgery of all the 4 eyelids (upper and lower) both sides simultaneously in a single sitting. It is usually done for late middle aged to elderly individuals who require not only correction of excess skin and or fat but also correction of canthal tilt and any other problem discussed during the preoperative counselling with your doctor. It’s a day care procedure and can be done under local anaesthesia.

What is Asian blepharoplasty/ what is Double Eyelid surgery procedure?

Asian Blepharoplasty or Double Eyelid surgery as it is commonly called refers to creation of an eyelid crease in those Asian individuals descent who usually lack it. This is done for purely aesthetic reasons and is a day care procedure which is easily done under local anaesthesia. In this procedure, the double eyelid crease which is absent due to lack of attachment of the LPS muscle to the dermis, this attachment is recreated by applying permanent sutures so that fibrosis occurs and it remains permanent. In this procedure sometimes excess skin and fat are also excised to give a deep natural crease effect.

Where are the scars located post blepharoplasty?

Any surgery outcome is determined by the scar placement as scars are permanent. Scars should be carefully planned or executed to give the best postoperative outcome. In upper Blepharoplasty the incision is placed in the upper eyelid crease so that it mimics a natural upper eyelid crease and no extra scars are visible. On Transconjunctival approach, the scars are never seen as they are in the conjunctival zone and heal uneventfully. The subciliary scar when placed well is hardly ever seen after a couple of days and heals uneventfully.

How to fix droopy eyelids without surgery?

Some younger individuals do not wish to undergo surgery and they look out for some nonsurgical methods to correct the same. Thread lift is a new non-invasive method to lift your eyelids and eyebrows without surgery. This is a quick OPD procedure done for younger individuals and gives a decent look. How to remove eyelid fat without surgery?

Eyelid fat cannot be removed without surgery, so the other way is to stretch the nearby skin by stretching the ligaments or reposition the fat. Fillers can be used for the same by placing at few strategic points and stretching the ligaments in the periorbital region. What to expect after eyelid surgery?

Immediately after surgery, patient experiences heaviness of the eyelids and swelling is always an expected phenomenon. Sterile tapes are applied for few days to support the eyelids. Patients are told to wear black goggles and go to work from next day if they wish to do so. The swelling slowly subsides over few days and patient can do icing. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications are given by your physician and eye drops or ointment to keep your eyes moist during sleep. Stitches are removed after 10 days, post which an anti-scar cream is given to patients to diminish the scar further.

How long does upper/ lower eyelid surgery take?

The upper and lower Blepharoplasty surgery is a complicated procedure which should be done by experts and not any surgeon. Since its very close to the eyes, great care should be taken not to damage the cornea or conjunctiva at any stage of the procedure. Normally average time taken for upper/lower blepharoplasty ranges from 30-45 minutes and is easily done under local anaesthesia.

Can Upper Eyelid surgery change vision?

Upper Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty not only improves the aesthetic outcome of the patients opting for the same but only improves the vision especially in elderly patients since not only the excess skin excised but also the herniated fat which created pressure on the upper eyelid causing vision problems.
