Eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure that removes excess fold of skin of the upper lids and pouches under the eyes (lower lids). This helps to improve your appearance, vision or both. It also helps in tightening of tissues especially in the lower eyelid. After the surgery there is some bruising and swelling which subsides within 7-10 days. Client can usually be back to normal activities in 1-2 days.

FAQ’S on Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

What does the word blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery mean?

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery can be used to correct both upper and or lower eyelids. It is a surgical procedure usually done under local anesthesia and involves removing excess fat, skin and tightening of the loose eyelids especially the lower ones to give you a younger look.

What are the important steps of the procedure?

After the photographs are taken for the clients, both the upper and lower eyelids are marked with a skin marker. For the upper eyelids, a natural crease incision is chosen and for lower eyelids a subciliary incision is given. The excess skin of the upper eyelid is initially removed along with raising of the flaps. Thereafter, excess fat is removed and lid tightening is done if required. The last step is the closure with fine sutures in layers.

Does the blepharoplasty procedure leave a scar later on?

The upper eyelid incision is basically a crease incision, so the scar falls in the natural crease line so the scar is almost non-existent. Similar is the case with subciliary incision, scar is just next to the eyelash and almost hidden in it, so after few weeks to months, it almost fades away.

Any age recommendations for the blepharoplasty procedure?

Well people usually start getting loose skin and under eye fat after 40-45 years. It comes a bit early for those who are genetically prone for the same, amongst other causes regular intake of alcohol or generalized obesity predisposes for it at a much younger age. So the procedure involves initial detailed consultation and planning to execute the procedure. There is no perfect age defining criteria.

When are the stitches removed? When are the results visible?

Stitches are usually removed in 5-7 days time and may be 1-2 days earlier or delayed depending on the healing ability of the body. Results are usually visible soon once the swelling starts getting down. So we recommend initially avoiding straining of the eyes too much and following the postop instructions carefully.

Does the blepharoplasty procedure remove wrinkles too?

The blepharoplasty procedure does not remove the wrinkles; there are other procedures for the same. This procedure basically takes care of excess fat and or skin and helps in lower eyelid tightening if required.

What are the postoperative instructions?

Immediately after surgery, our staff shall do some icing so that it reduces the swelling, discomfort and bruising. We recommend client to wear black goggles till the time swelling subsides so as to protect from discomfort due to the harmful rays. Also from the very next day the client can start washing the face and apply the ointment, which we suggest. Also we recommend one to do icing 2-3 times a day for 10 min each or as much as you can tolerate. Still if u have any doubts feel free to contact any of us or the clinic staff for the same.

What are the complications or risks associated with blepharoplasty procedure?

Every procedure does involve risks though we try our best to avoid or minimize the same. Minor complications include temporary blurring of vision due to the swelling, excessive swelling due to tissue reaction and bruising around your eyes. As told above the tissues heal differently and some may heal faster than others, so its important to follow the postop instructions carefully and any deviation from the healing process if u feel please contact your surgeon or concerned staff immediately.

What is double eyelid surgery or Asian blepharoplasty?

This surgery involves creating a natural crease in the eyelid for those who have a single eyelid or in simpler terms no crease in the upper eyelids. It is popular among many Asians since many of them lack an upper eyelid crease, which is created surgically to give a normal contour. This ethnic plastic surgery is one of the most requested procedures among Asians. The steps of the procedure are essentially the same, differences basically imply not to remove skin or fat in most of such cases and to reconstruct an eyelid crease for those who lack it.
